Climate Change

Valerio Llantoy Molina, 56 stands by the last remaining bit of snow left from the Ritipata snow peak, in Peru. "Before I used to come on foot to Ritipata, it was covered in snow and the animals even died because the snow was so deep". The water from the snow melt used to form and feed lagoons. Today, his animals have fewer grazing areas and water is scarce”. Christian Aid's partner CEDAP’s techniques have helped him improve his pastureland. He is rotating his animals grazing areas to allow the grass to recover. To increase the amount of water he has available, he has built a reservoir that allows him to collect rain water during the wet season.

There is general agreement by the IPCC, the United Nations and the European Union that global temperatures must not rise by more than 2ºC by 2050 if we are to avoid run away and irreversible global warming and urgent cuts in carbon emissions need to be made to ensure that does not happen.

If the rise in global warming is not kept below 2ºC the potential results are:

  • 228 million people at risk from malaria
  • 20 million people at risk from coastal flooding
  • 12 million people at risk from hunger as crop yields fail
  • 2,240 million people at risk from water shortages
  • Serious drought in Europe every decade
  • Extinction of up to a third of land-based species.
